Embracing Flexibility: Real-Time Learnings
One of the most beautiful aspects of bringing Dog Adventure Hikes to life is witnessing how each experience refines and strengthens the offering. While the foundation was thoughtfully built, stepping into real-time adventures has shown me that flexibility and responsiveness are key to making every journey truly heart-centered — for both the dogs and me, their buddy.
Recently, during one hike, a dog felt uneasy about getting into my vehicle. We adapted the plan: we just started walking, letting the dog's nose and comfort level guide the process. Starting from her familiar environment allowed her natural instincts to lead the way, creating a rich, fulfilling 2.5-hour experience.
This sweet soul reveled in the chance to explore both the known and the unknown. We let her nose guide us — a wonderful reminder that sometimes the best adventures bloom from honoring where each dog is. Nature breaks in nearby green spaces added moments of relaxation, companionship, and pure joy. By the end, we had logged an impressive 10,000 steps (and surely even more paw steps!) — a true win for movement, exploration, scent work, and connection.
From this, an important shift has been added to the Dog Adventure Hikes: for new clients, or for those new to hiking/walking with me, we'll begin with an Introductory Meet-and-Greet Walk within her or his known environment: their neighborhood and adjoining areas. Even small changes in environment or routine can feel big to some dogs, so this gentle introduction ensures a smoother, more positive experience right from the start. In addition, I am looking to create a shorter adventure for those that may not have the full physical strength or energy to do a trail or neighborhood hike that needs a gentler solution that promotes the same love and joy closer to home.
Every adventure is a co-created journey, guided by presence, intuition, and a willingness to adapt. It’s never about forcing — it’s about meeting each dog exactly where they are and building from that place of trust. I’m excited to continue learning from these incredible beings and evolving the adventures to best support their joy, well-being, and spirit of discovery.
The Dog Adventure Hikes/Walks’ initial debut has been extended for select days in May while we still have some cooler mornings. It will then return during the October/November timeframe when cooler days arrive in Arizona through April.
